Frequently Asked Questions…
Q: So, what kind of work do you do?
A: I have studied massage and bodywork since 1997. I would classify the work that I do as eclectic. I began my studies with Swedish massage for relaxation, and the Japanese form of zen shiatsu, which is a system that works well with the systems, organs and emotions of the human being. As I continued studying the anatomy of the body it occurred to me that it was very possible to get very specific. I began studying massage for common injuries, and sports massage, along with more anatomy and physiology. Somewhere along the way I picked up the “spa” modalities, a bit of reflexology, polarity therapy, specific stretching techniques, and I believe I have found a few things that I was never “taught”. Never straying to far from the energetics of the body, and having a comprehensive understanding of anatomy and physiology allows me to do the work I do.

Q: Should I wear my clothes?
A: In some situations it is helpful to have clothes on (shorts, sports bra, and underwear) as may be the case when doing a lot of stretching. However, when the attempt is to create movement over the skin to increase circulation and break up scar tissue, it may be best to be partially disrobed. If a client is ever uncomfortable with disrobing, the work can be altered to accommodate these concerns.
Q: How often should I receive bodywork?

A: This can be influenced by several factors; injury status, workload, where are you in training for sport and so on. New injuries usually require frequent but shorter session, as the tissue can not handle too much at once. The frequency may be lessened as time goes on, with longer sessions. Strengthening and home stretching protocols have been shown to reduce the time a client needs to spend with a soft tissue therapist.

Q: Why do you believe so strongly in licensure and regulation?

A: I believe it is important for any professional to go through the process of licensure if it is place.  I believe this protects the industry as well as the individual.
